History |
Hefei (known as Luzhou during the Ming and Qing Dynasties), was important as an agricultural and military center in early times. As a crossroads between the north and the south, and holding an important strategic position between the Yangtze and Hauihe Rivers, it was the scene of many celebrated battles, especially during the Three Kingdoms period.
By the late 1940s it had become a quiet market town with a population of about 50,000, but the fortunes of the city changed after Hefei replaced Anqing as the capital of Anhui province in 1946. Since then the city has boomed as the administrative, industrial and cultural center of Anhui |
